Why the Sample Is the Contract

Mass production in a wire factory runs to the approved sample and the spec sheet. When a conflict appears later — "the color looks different," "the basket is smaller than I thought," "the coating chips" — the factory points to the sample. If the sample shows the issue, you approved it. If it does not, you have a case.

Thickness — a coating thickness gauge (powder coating: 60 µm+ is a healthy target for household wire products) gives you a number to enforce

Also test the coating the way your customer will: wipe it, scratch it lightly, check it for runs or drips on edges. If the sample chips under a fingernail, the production batch will chip in transit.

Edges and Welds: Where Quality Shows

Wire products fail at the details:

  • Burns and sharp edges — a burr on a shelf edge is a safety complaint waiting to happen
  • Weld quality — welds should be smooth and fully fused; cracked or rough welds break under load and snag clothing
  • Weld coating — rust starts at welds; the coating must cover them completely

Run your hand over every edge — the "hand test" catches what photos never will.

Function: Test It Like a User

A wire basket that looks perfect on a table may fail in real use. Before approving:

  • Stack the baskets six high with weight and see if they locate securely

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I approve a sample I have not physically seen? For critical programs, no. If a physical sample is impossible, ask for video showing dimensions measured, coating close-ups and a load test — and state that approval is conditional on the production inspection matching the spec.

What if the sample differs slightly from my spec? Never approve "close enough" silently. Either request a corrected sample or write the deviation into the approval with a signed tolerance. Unwritten deviations become production standards.

How many samples should I ask for? Ask for 2–3 pieces of the same sample: one for testing, one for record, one for the factory's own production reference. A single piece disappears into someone's drawer.
